I was interested in the Rape seed oil article.

This is an aside. Do you know the movie "Lorenzo's Oil.? Rapeseed Oil is the oil that saved his life.

The source of supply was located by a healthfood company called Health Way in the DC area.

It would not be possible to get a large chain store to do this kind of research for a customer.

Wish I understood the complex chemistry of this oil on
Lorenzo Odona's mystery disease.

Thanks for raising that Elizabeth. I've not seen the movie but I've heard that it promoted a lot of interest in the oil used to help Lorenzo Odone.

The oil was a mixture between fatty acids found in olive oil and rapeseed oil (canola). The two particular fatty acids are oleic and erucic acid and they are thought to help prevent the uptake of long chain fatty acids, which may help allay or delay onset of the disease.

The disease from which Lorenzo suffered was adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) which affects the brain with often devastating consequences. Damage is caused by the excessive uptake of long chain fatty acids. His parents were told that he would have only two or three years to live.

The work on using Lorenzo's oil goes on through the Myelin Project which was founded by Lorenzo's parents. It researches myelin repair. Myelin is damaged in both ALD and multiple sclerosis (MS).

Lorenzo died from his condition in 2008 but there is still some hope that the discovery of Lorenzo's oil can help other sufferers from ALD and related diseases.
